When Antidepressants Don't Work Enough

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and yet a significant percentage of people with major depressive disorder don't achieve full relief from antidepressant medications. If you've tried two or more antidepressants without adequate improvement, you may have treatment-resistant depression — and there are now effective, FDA-approved options designed specifically for you.

At Sonoran Sun Wellness, we offer both NeuroStar® TMS and Spravato® as part of a comprehensive psychiatric care approach — meaning you're supported before, during, and after these treatments with evaluation, monitoring, and coordinated care.

Our Approach to Advanced Depression Care

Advanced depression treatment begins with diagnostic clarity, not assumptions.

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation

  • Review of prior medications and treatment history

  • Assessment for co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, or trauma-related symptoms

  • Discussion of advanced treatment options and appropriateness

NeuroStar® TMS Therapy

NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment for major depressive disorder that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. No medication. No sedation. No memory effects. Most patients continue their normal daily activities immediately after each session.

TMS is delivered 5 days per week, with sessions lasting approximately 20-40 minutes. Treatment duration is individualized. It is covered by most major insurance plans for qualifying patients.

Spravato® (Esketamine)

Spravato is an FDA-approved nasal spray treatment for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). It works through a different mechanism than traditional antidepressants — targeting the brain's glutamate system — and many patients experience improvement within days, not weeks.

Spravato is administered in-office under medical supervision and is used alongside an oral antidepressant as part of a structured treatment program. Transportation arrangements are required for each session. We verify insurance coverage for Spravato before treatment begins.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy combines the neuroplasticity-enhancing effects of ketamine with structured psychotherapy to support deeper healing and lasting change. Unlike standalone ketamine infusions, our KAP program is a clinically guided, therapeutically supported experience — with preparation, medicine sessions, and integration therapy built into every package.

Ketamine works on the brain's glutamate system — the same pathway as Spravato — and can produce rapid reductions in depressive symptoms, including in patients who have not responded to multiple antidepressant trials. The addition of structured integration therapy is what transforms a medicine session into lasting psychological change.

  • 3 medicine sessions paired with 3 integration therapy sessions (6-week alternating model)

  • Medicine sessions are self-pay: $350 per session (standard) / $450 with Reiki support

  • Integration therapy sessions billed to your insurance as standard psychotherapy

  • Optional Reiki support available within sessions

  • Clinical evaluation required to determine candidacy

Comparing your options: TMS and Spravato are typically covered by insurance for qualifying patients with treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine-assisted therapy (KAP) medicine sessions are self-pay, though integration sessions are billed to insurance. Your provider will discuss which approach — or combination — is most appropriate for your clinical situation.

How We Choose the Right Treatment for You

No two people with treatment-resistant depression are the same, and no single advanced treatment is right for everyone. At Sonoran Sun Wellness, treatment selection is always based on a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that considers your diagnosis, treatment history, current medications, insurance coverage, schedule, and personal preferences.

In some cases, a combination of approaches — for example, TMS alongside ketamine-assisted therapy, or Spravato combined with ongoing medication management and therapy — produces the best outcomes. Your provider will walk you through the evidence and help you make an informed decision.

Why Integrated Advanced Care Matters

Unlike clinics that offer TMS or Spravato as standalone procedures, Sonoran Sun Wellness provides these treatments within a comprehensive mental health framework. Every patient receives a thorough psychiatric evaluation, medication review, outcome monitoring, and coordination with therapy when appropriate. This integrated approach supports better long-term outcomes — not just temporary symptom relief.
